I'm Rebecca, your SLP!

My name is Rebecca Robbins and I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist who has spent most of my career working with children on the Autism Spectrum.

Over my 15 years as a speech-language pathologist, I've had dozens of nonverbal or minimally verbal children enter my caseload. As such, it became necessary for me to figure out how to help these children talk. The work I’ve done for those children has resulted in the creation of a structured system of hand cues that I use to teach children how to say all the different speech sounds.

What I’ve also discovered over the course of my career is that these hand cues work for any child that needs help with their speech production. From the child who is still learning to say their first few sounds, to the older child still working on correcting those last few articulation errors and all those in between. These hand cues work!

These are the very hand cues you will learn in the Your Child Can Say Sounds Kits.

My goal is to put the power back in your hands as the parent by training and teaching you to do what I do in my therapy room. That’s why I’ve created the Your Child Can Say Sounds Kits.

It took my knowledge and expertise as a speech-language pathologist to develop these kits but the tools inside can be implemented by anyone who is willing to take the time to learn them!

RESULTS

And once your child learns the cues too, they will even be able to start using them independently to help themselves talk (which is the ultimate goal of the Your Child Can Say Sounds hand cues).

I want to tell you about one of my favorite success stories I’ve had in my career using the Your Child Can Say Sounds hand cues.

It’s about a little boy diagnosed with Autism who entered my caseload completely unable to speak BUT boy was he able to communicate!

I remember one day, my grad student and I were baselining his ability to label pictures as we were in the process of writing his goals. I showed him a picture of a banana…

Well, this little boy, who had absolutely no ability to produce actual speech, looked at us, said “oo oo oo” while acting like a monkey then pretended to peel and eat a banana!

I looked at my grad student with my jaw on the floor, laughed and said, “That’s right. It’s a banana. A monkey eats a banana.” We all left the session smiling ear to ear!

Fast forward to about a year-and-a-half later... I had been teaching this little boy to talk using the Your Child Can Say Sounds hand cues and he was now a verbal communicator.

One day, his mom called me after his recent visit to his neurologist to tell me that because of the progress he had made in his ability to talk, his neurologist was now able to assess his true abilities in a much more accurate way.

***At that appointment, he removed this boy’s diagnosis of Autism and changed it to Apraxia of Speech with an associated Sensory Processing Disorder!***

I had suspected this was the case all along because he was so social and such a strong nonverbal communicator. I talked to his mom and assured her this is a very good thing! We both hung up the phone that day feeling happy.

By the time this boy left our program, he was speaking in sentences and cracking everyone up because he was finally able to express his amazing sense of humor!

This is the power that lies inside these hand cues. They truly can unlock a child’s potential to learn how to say speech sounds.

This whole body and sensory approach helps the child gain control over the muscles in their mouth resulting in the ability to say more and more sounds.

Which is great news because repetition is the key to your child building the neural pathways necessary to produce speech so that saying sounds becomes easy and automatic.

How much time do I need to devote to this for it to work?

As with anything in life, you will get out of this program what you put in, so the more you implement the program and its strategies with your child, the better your results will be. However, I understand that life is busy so I recommend a minimum of 15-30 minutes 2-3 times per week of structured practice with your child and squeezing in extra informal practice during daily routines, such as bathtime. The more you use these hand cues throughout the day, both when you’re talking to your child and to prompt your child to say the sounds, the faster and better your child will be able to incorporate these sounds in their spontaneous speech. The instructional videos are about 20 minutes long and can be watched as you plan to target each new sound with your child.
